What to Do When the Refrigerator Stops Working

Your refrigerator is one of the most used appliances in your home, but what do you do when it stops functioning? Below are some common refrigerator issues and how to resolve them.

Fridge Won’t Stop Running

The buildup of ice or dirt is oftentimes the cause of a refrigerator working overtime. This buildup might be ice in a fridge that doesn’t self-defrost, or maybe dirt has accumulated around the coils at the bottom.

If it’s ice buildup in your non-self-defrosting fridge, empty it, turn it off, and allow it to fully defrost. If ice is not the problem, or your refrigerator defrosts on its own, check around the bottom of the fridge to see if the coils look dirty. You may be able to resolve this by simply sweeping around the refrigerator, or it might be necessary to turn off the fridge and vacuum around the coils.

Ice Buildup Around the Freezer Door

If you notice ice building up around the freezer door, first check to see if the door is fully closed. If it is, the seal around the door may need to be replaced. It’s also possible that you’re overstuffing the freezer. If that’s the case, use stackable freezer storage organizers to create more space.

Fridge Isn’t Staying Cold

If the refrigerator isn’t cold, there may be a problem with the condenser coils, condenser fan, or refrigerant. Try cleaning the coils to see if that helps; otherwise, you’ll need to call a technician.

Something’s Leaking

Refrigerator leaks indicate that something is blocked or clogged up. They also indicate that the defrost drainpipe isn’t properly emptying into the drain pan.

First, reorganize the food to create more space between items as well as to determine where the leak is coming from. Check the defrost drain to see if there is food blocking it. Remove any food blocking the drain hole. Then, use a turkey baster to spray hot water through the hole. Do this until you can audibly hear the water hitting the drain pan.

Ice and Water Dispenser Isn’t Working

If the water/ice dispenser isn’t working you might have one of three problems: The water tub in the freezer is frozen and needs to be thawed, the water inlet valve is faulty and needs to be replaced, or you may have low water pressure from a plumbing problem. Have an experienced appliance technician come over and investigate.
